Filmed on location in Italian Renaissance landmarks, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s lavish production captures all the tenderness & tragedy of Verdi’s heart-breaking drama. Luciano Pavarotti in his formidable prime is the dashing, dissolute Duke of Mantua who seduces fair, innocent Gilda - a virtuoso performance by Edita Gruberova - away from her protective father, the hunchback court jester Rigoletto, sung & acted with indelible pathos by Ingvar Wixell.

The film is the fifth of six operas being screened at 3pm on the second Sunday of each month - April to September, as part of the 2024 Mangawhai Opera Lovers Film Festival. Join us for a glass of bubbles and canapes at 2.45pm.

There will be a short introduction to the film at the Mangawhai Opera Lovers Film Festival (5-10 minutes at 3pm) before the film is screened. A short, written synopsis of the opera will be provided.

Note the start time is 3pm (1500), not 4pm. Ticket price is $15.
