Puccini’s Japanese tragedy Madama Butterfly is given a ravishing production by The Royal Opera.  Alluring images of Japan as seen in the 19th Century European imagination reflect the work’s intense depiction of the clash of East and West.

When the American naval officer Pinkerton seduces the young ‘Butterfly’ Cio-Cio-San, he seems to promise every happiness - but his cruel abandonment leads to her tragic self-sacrifice.

The film is the final of six operas being screened at 3pm on the second Sunday of each month - April to September, as part of the 2024 Mangawhai Opera Lovers Film Festival.  Join us for a glass of bubbles and canapes at 2.45pm.

There will be a short introduction to the film at the Mangawhai Opera Lovers Film Festival (5-10 minutes at 3pm) before the film is screened. A short, written synopsis of the opera will be provided.

Note the start time is 3pm (1500), not 4pm. Ticket price is $15.
