Massenet’s Manon is all about sex appeal, glamour, beauty, and youth, and if there is a couple on the international opera scene able to embody all these elements, it is the ‘gifted singing actors’ Anna Netrebko, in a part that seems to have been made for her, and Rolando Villazon, expressively deploying his flaming, flexible tenor as her tragic lover.
Live from Berlin, conducted by Daniel Barenboim with spontaneity and throbbing passion.
The film is the fourth of six operas being screened at 2pm on the second Sunday of each month - April to September, as part of the 2026 Mangawhai Opera Lovers Film Festival.
